>Greater Than Gold

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” —Matthew 6:21, NKJ

On the pages of novel Mercy, Mercy Me, author Ronn Elmore, paints for readers the character, Dwayne Grandison. One of Grandison’s internal struggles is whether to succumb to the lure of fortune and fame or surrender to the eternal wealth God has in store for him.

In today’s money-matters and fame-makes-you society, it is easy to identify with Grandison’s dilemma. Of course God wants His children to have the best, but He reminds us in Matthew 6, verses 19 through 21, the pursuit of material accumulation is not to be our primary goal. Instead, we are to pursue a closer relationship with God and take someone else along for the ride. In other words, we are to share the message that God has the power to restore every broken life.

Are you sometimes tempted to look at those with worldly possessions and question or criticize them for not sharing their wealth with the less fortunate? Well, as a believer, we have wealth that far exceeds tangible opulence and that is greater than the largest pot of glimmering gold. We have the rich and regal message of the gospel. Yet, how long has it been since you’ve told someone how much God cherishes them? Like Dwayne Grandison discovers, our greatest desire should not be to prosper in name or finance, but to love God, love others, and share the message of His love with others.

Reflection:
“ But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” —Matthew 6:33, NKJ
