 Interview with Author,
Marilynn Griffith

SP:
Welcome to Soul Pen, Marilynn Got-it -going-on  Griffith
! You already know I greatly admire you, but I'm going to tell everyone now. Marilynn, I consider you a bold pen for God. Your unique words are inspiring, your bright example is empowering, and your Godly life is a blessing to me as well as many others. Thank your for being my friend and encourager.

Marilynn: Hey, Mighty Miss Mata! I don't really know how to follow all of that, but thank you. I respect you very much as well.

SP: I enjoyed every page of PINK. The main character, Raya, is a pink-lovin' girl who is not afraid to greet the world with a new hairstyle. So tell us your favorite color and what is a fun hairstyle for Marilynn Griffith?

Marilynn: Though I'll throw on some of Raya's pink in a minute, I've been doing a cocoa brown thing lately. A fun hairstyle for me is curling my locks or doing an up do. I'm pretty much freestyle when it comes to hair.

SP: Okay, Marilynn, I know you remember this. A little more than two years ago, sitting together at a conference, waiting for our chances to meet with an editor (I can laugh about it now) and discuss our proposals. Tell us how the door to publishing opened for you and about the books you have on the 2006 shelf.

Marilynn: Do I remember it? Girl, I'll never forget it! And look at all God has done for you since then. One of my publishing opportunities came at that very conference. It was there that I pitched MADE OF HONOR to the head of Steeple Hill's Cafe line. PINK came after another manuscript was rejected by Revell and my agent pitched them something new.

SP: You are a novelist, free-lance writer, speaker, editorof the fabulous Word Praize, wife, mother, and there are probably a few categories I've missed. Many women struggle with managing their family, career, church work, etc. How do you balance it all and still make time for yourself on any given day?

Marilynn: I wish I could say it always balances. Right now, there's a pile of laundry at my feet, a kid on my shoulder and PBS is on. I struggle with everyone else to keep things straight and sometimes I mess things up. Flexibility is a lesson I keep having to relearn every day. Having a great husband, good friends, and helpful children are probably the only secret I have. LOL

SP:  You are not only a great writer but a great teacher, and I had the privilege of sitting in on one of your classess which definitely aided me with my writing. As writers we have to continually hone our craft. What steps have you taken toward making your own writing stronger?

Marilynn: I definitely have a lot to learn about writing. I read craft books, listen to workshop tapes, critique other writers and get critiques on my writing in order to learn more about what makes a story work. Most of all though, I try to read as much as possible. Reading is as much my job as writing.

SP: One of the messages that I came away with after reading PINK is that even on the darkest days of life, God is there. Encourage us with a testimony from your life in which you discovered just how true this is.

Marilynn: Oh Man. There have been so many times like that for me, but I have to say it would be during my pregnancy with my oldest daughter. A lot of people turned their backs on me, but God showed Himself strong. He'd been there with me all along but it took hitting bottom for me to see it.

SP: Readers will undoubtedly be blessed from reading PINK. What is one of the things you have gained from writing this novel?

Marilynn: I learned more about friendship and loving people where they are, about loving myself where I am.

SP: Marilynn, I can't thank you enough for joining us today. I wish you the best as you continue to write, work, and walk in the anointing God has placed on your life.

Marilynn: Mata, God's best to you. Thank you so much for having me. I can't wait to read FORGIVIN' AIN'T FORGETTIN'. I look  forward to seeing you again soon too.
